Dark Hawk - 2002
Black Walnut, Dogwood, dowel pins, Sassafras & Ebony paste - 16 x 8 1/2 x 8 inches - $300
I call this carving Dark Hawk because the wood is dark colored and it doesn't look like any particular species, though it is closer in appearance to a Red-tailed Hawk than to anything else.
Red-tailed Hawks are my favorite bird of prey subject because I have a collection of my own photographs of them and see them often on my own farm. An example of my Red-tailed Hawk carvings can be seen at this address on our personal page. I also try to keep an eagle or two on hand because they are, after all, our national symbol.
My interest in birds goes beyond using them as subject matter for my carvings. I am a member of the Kentucky Ornithological Society and the Kentucky Bluebird Society. Observing the birds on my own farm has long been a part of my daily routine.
