Heron by Frank Lyne

March 5 - March 30, 2001 - 58 hours labor - Black Walnut - about 27 x 12 x 7 inches - sold

This carving was in the Hopkinsville Art Guild 2001 Pennyroyal Art Exhibit. It won first place in the 3-d category.

This carving is made from a block of wood which was the opposite half of the block from which I carved the imaginary antelope shown below. I made the billets for these two carvings by splitting a forked section of a walnut log into two pieces with a sledge hammer and wedges. In each carving the head follows the grain of the limb and the body follows the grain of the main trunk. The billets were almost identical miror images of each other. I think the results are pretty distinctive from one another.
